ACRS response to the GBRMPA and the AIMS Reef snapshot: Summer 2021-22

The summer of 2021-22 has been another hot and challenging season for the Great Barrier Reef. We’ve seen the hottest December since 1990, the 4th mass bleaching event since 2016 and the first ever bleaching event under La Niña conditions. In the linked response below, the Australian Coral Reef Society gives their views on the Summer Reef Snapshot report released by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA), the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The ACRS stresses the need of a comprehensive national plan to reduce domestic greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the impact of global warming and to improve coral reef health.

We would like to thank President Sarah Hamylton for writing, and the ACRS council for editing.
